The Orange Thimble @ Eng Hoon Street

Where art meets cafe

The Orange Thimble is not a cafe. Nor is it art. It’s both and everything in between. Go figure!

Contemporary artworks take center stage on the walls while egg cartons lining the top and bottom add a certain quirkiness to the ambience, which is welcoming and cozy.

A mouth-watering array of viennoiserie greeted us upon entry, followed by a selection of ice cream complete with vintage porcelain bowls and spoons in the display counter. Took a U-turn and we came upon the cakes, which unfortunately was quite limited.

After settling on a table with a prominent cablight, we proceeded to place our order at the counter.

Our drinks were disappointing. K’s iced latte ($6) was bitter while my hot chocolate ($4.50) was weak, but the iced gems (biskut ais jem) got us reminiscing our childhood while waiting for the buzzer to come alive.

The english breakfast ($11.50 – all-day brunch on weekends) came with sunny side up, pork sausages, streaky bacon, roasted tomato, sautéed mushroom, homemade baked beans and rye toast. Every morsel was delicious but sadly the eggs were overdone.

We enjoyed the bacon and chorizo quiche ($6.50), which was served warm with a tasty pickled cabbage salad with carrot, lettuce and raisins. The filling was smooth, creamy and well-balanced with adequate meat slices for added texture. However, the crust was soggy and limp.

The brioche (loaf – $5) was also warmed up, and we polished off the soft and pillowy bread with gusto.

Not exactly fantastic, but the food was decent enough to satisfy our hunger pangs. The staff were friendly and we particularly liked the nostalgic feel of the place.
